Amazon Australia has launched a new category of second-hand technology products in an attempt to cash in on the country’s booming billion-dollar preloved market. Named Amazon Renewed, the new category will offer refurbished mobile phones, computers, tablets, and audio products from brands such as Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and Dell.

Each of the products will have been inspected and tested by qualified suppliers and will be offered with a guarantee that they will work and look like new. Today, we get into the roots of the second-hand technology that is to be sold on Amazon Australia.

Has to be approved before anything

According to sources, each and every product on the site will have to undergo a refurbishment process that will include a full diagnostic test, replacement of any defective parts, a thorough cleaning and inspection process, and repackaging by the seller or refurbisher. Matt Furlong, Country Manager of Amazon Australia, said the move into second-hand goods will help budget-conscious shoppers.

    Worth more than ever

Retail expert Dr. Brian Walker told 9news.com.au that Amazon’s foray into pre-loved goods is a smart approach that will help the online giant eat into the market currently dominated by Gumtree and eBay. He has also explained Australia’s second-hand or refurbished market or economy to be valued at an astounding $34 billion, further stating that it accounts for approximately 12 percent of overall retail sales and what Amazon is doing is positioning itself up against the Gumtrees and Ebays of the world with this new program.

    Right on track

Amazon first launched in Australia in 2017 to mixed reception, with many commentators heralding the entry of the US giant as a doomsday scenario for local retailers. Despite Amazon’s seemingly lackluster launch, Dr. Walker said he believes the business is right on track with its Australian strategy.
