Halsey makes a new beauty looks, no matter how extreme, including the glittery bruise she did to herself on the cover of her latest album, Manic, which she gets inspired by David Bowie’s fearlessness and Patti Smith’s androgyny.
In a Vogue makeup tutorial, “You Should Be Sad” singer shared how she created the watercolor-like look and also talked about her inspiration behind the beautiful yet slightly gruesome makeup.
She said that when she was coming up with the art for the album cover, the black eye was an essential part of it because she thinks a black eye recognized universally as a sign of pain or trauma or abuse.

Halsey said the album is a lot about her outgrowing traumas and some things which she feels have been otherwise holding her back from really becoming herself in her early 20s. She also said that she did the black eye as she wanted to do it in glitter because she wants to make it almost like a badge of honor for what she has been through.
And through these album cycle, the black eye goes from black glitter to red glitter and then to yellow glitter, which symbolizes the stages of healing that the bruise goes through. So, hopefully in a year, she will be seen running around with a face full of yellow glitter instead.
It is not a surprise to see the Halsey’s artistic inspiration behind the album cover as we knew that she wanted to go to art school before becoming a musician. She said that before she was a musician, she was all set to go to the art school after high school.
She said that a lot of people don’t have any idea about how alike painting and makeup. There is a lot of it is in knowing colors, understanding analogous colors, using greens to cancel out reds, using yellows in your blues and purples, and also, more importantly, being good with a brush.
