Creating a local account for a child or someone else who doesn’t have a Microsoft surface account isn’t as hard as it sounds.
With a few simple steps, it can be done by anyone at any time. As you create an account for your Surface Pro X, choosing a password and keeping it safe are essential steps. Because they don’t know your password, if you forget it or lose it, they cannot recover it for you.
If you’re using Windows 10, version 1803 and later, you can add security questions, as you’ll see later under Create a local user account. With answers to your security questions, you can reset your Windows 10 local account password.
But in the case that you do have already have Windows 10 installed on your PC, you’ll have to go through a separate setup process. Today, we guide you through the steps of switching to a local account once you’ve set it all up.
How to create a local user account
- Select the Start button, select Settings > Accounts and then select Family & other users. In some editions of Windows, you’ll see Other users.
2. Select Add someone else to this PC.
3. Select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, and on the next page, select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
4. Enter a user name, password, password hint or choose security questions, and then select Next.
Already have an account? Here’s what to do
If you’ve already created a Microsoft account on your Microsoft phone or surface duo, you can convert it to a local user account afterward.
In fact, this is what Microsoft officially recommends during the installation process—just signing in with a Microsoft account and removing it later. To do this, head to Settings > Accounts > Your Info in Windows 10.
Click “Sign in with a local account instead” and Windows 10 will guide you through switching from a Microsoft account to a local user account.
