World Teachers’ Day is hosted every year on October 5. Established in 1994, it marks the beginning of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation with respect to the Status of Teachers, which is an instrument that sets the standard for addressing the status and situations of teachers across the world.
This move decided standards concerned with education personnel decisions, recruitment, and initial training as well as the ever-evolving education of teachers, their employment, and working conditions.
The focus of the World Teachers’ Day lies on “appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world” and to give them an opportunity to oversee issues related to teachers and teaching.
To mark the World Teachers’ Day, UNESCO and Education International (EI) hosts a campaign every year to provide help to the world in ensuring an improved understanding of teachers and the vital impact they have on the growth and progress of students and society at large.
They collaborate with the private sector such as media organizations to reach their yearly goals. The campaign concentrates on different themes every year. For instance, “Empowering Teachers” was the theme for 2017.
This also coincided with the World Teachers’ Day celebrating its 20th anniversary of the 1997 UNESCO Recommendation associated with the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel.
It brings the often neglected area of teaching staff at Higher Education institutions into a discussion about the status of teachers.
For 2018, the UNESCO planned to host the theme: “The right to education says the right to a qualified teacher.”It marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and acts as an important reminder that the right to education cannot be achieved without trained and qualified teachers.
