While the Apple Watch has a speaker, it’s only meant for tones, calls, Siri on Series 3, and other short and simple sounds.

If you want to listen to your music, for that matter any other audio, you’ve synced with Apple Watch, or Apple Music streaming on Series 3 and above watches, you’ll need to pair your watch with some wireless headphones such as as as your refurbished AirPods. Here’s how to do so.

Know how it works first

Your Apple Watch doesn’t have a wired headphone port to plug in a set of earbuds. Instead, it sends audio wirelessly.

The Apple Watch supports any Bluetooth headphones or headset that connects via Bluetooth 4.0 or Apple’s W-series chip, like the AirPods and Beats products; pre-4.0 Bluetooth headsets may run into problems in terms of range or in some cases, may not show up to pair at all.

How to connect Bluetooth headphones to an Apple Watch

  1. Put your headphones or earbuds in pairing mode. The specific method varies depending upon what model you own, but generally, you simply need to press and hold the power button for six to ten seconds until the status starts flashing. Refer to your headphones user guide for details.
  2. On your Apple Watch, press the Digital Crown and start the Settings app.
  3. Tap ‘Bluetooth.’
  4. In the list of devices on the Bluetooth page, tap the headphones when they appear. If you don’t see them, make sure your headphones are still in Pairing mode, and make sure Bluetooth is turned on at the bottom of the screen on the Apple Watch. If needed, swipe the button to the right.

The headphones should pair automatically and you’ll be ready to listen to audio through your Apple Watch.
