Sony: Announced FX9 6K Full-frame HDR camcorder, Full specs and features inside

Sony has declared the PXW-FX9 camera at the IBC 2019 in Amsterdam. The PXW-FX9 utilizes a full-frame 6K sensor and possesses a Fast Hybrid Auto Focus (AF) system.

Everyone looks to be going with full-frame sensors nowadays, so it is not really a surprise that Sony has decided to utilize one in the FX9.

We are not sure yet if the FX9 uses the same sized 24.8MP 36.2 x 24.1mm full-frame CMOS sensor that is seen in the VENICE. Sony claims that the newly-developed 6K Full-Frame sensor in the FX9 gives a wide dynamic range with extra sensitivity, low voice and over 15 stops of latitude.

Although the sensor is 6K, the FX9 cannot record in resolutions above 4K DCI. Basically, the camera will capture in 16:9. 17:9 (active about 19M pixel) will be backed by a future update.

We have seen Panasonic positively implement Dual ISO into the Varicam 35, Varicam LT, EVA1, and S1H. Sony has done a similar thing with the VENICE. The VENICE gives a base ISO of 500 along with a High Base ISO of 2500.

On the FX9 the Dual Base ISO is of 800 and 4000. The FX9 provides a next-generation sensor chipset giving much improved AF with face detection and Eye-AF. This is the technology that has provided its way above from Sony’s Alpha series mirrorless cameras.

The improved Fast Hybrid AF network has customizable AF changes speeds and sensitivity settings, and also combines phase-detection AF for speedy, accurate subject tracking with contrasting AF for the exceptionally focal point.

The dedicated 561-point phase-finding AF sensor covers approx 94% in width and 96% in height of imaging region, which Sony claims gives consistently accurate, responsive AF tracking, even with speedy-moving subjects while managing shallow depth of field.
