HBO seeks to expand its relations with one of its established hit-makers partnering with one of the biggest actor in Hollywood. For a television film, Nic Pizzolatto and Robert Downey Jr. are in negotiations with the writer of “True Detective” attached to writing, and the actor of “Iron Man” attached to the lead, sources say.
HBO and Pizzolatto’s agents and Downey Jr., all declined to comment.
Plot details remain sparse, but insiders say the movie is based on the remake of Downey Jr.’s “Perry Mason,” which he had produced for several years as a feature film at Warner Bros. Pizzolatto, Joe Horacek, Downey Jr. and Team Downey’s managing associate and wife, Susan Downey will serve as executive producers.

The project will be a series as indicated by the sources, not a TV film, and that since May the group has been gesturing at HBO.
Apart from his “Ally McBeal” run in the early 2000s, this film will be Downey Jr.’s first starring role on television until he re-surged to a box office phenomenon.
For some time, Downey Jr. has wanted to do some kind of “Perry Mason” project, having originally set it up as a film back in 2011 at Warner Bros. The film never found its footing and the studio and Team Downey felt that TV was better platform for it after his last lawyer-driven movie “The Judge” saw inconsistent results at the box office.
With the third season of “True Detective” still in motion, this upcoming show leaves Pizzolatto sliding into the HBO with a new high-profile film, adding to his overall contract with the premium cabler that extends through 2018.
