Danny Torrance comes back to the Overlook Hotel forty years after The Shining in the latest trailer for Doctor Sleep, the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 sequel to his 1977 novel.
Despite King’s famous distaste for Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation – “My issue with Kubrick’s film was that it’s so cold,” King told Rolling Stone a week ago – Doctor Sleep adapts heavily from that horror classic, with director Mike Flanagan recreating the iconic scenes from Kubrick’s film, including Danny’s hallway getaway with the twins and the elevator gushing blood. “The reason I didn’t have any problem with this script is they borrowed some of Kubrick’s material and kept it warmed up,” King added.
Mike Flanagan also discussed adapting The True Knot and “taking them in a slight of an alternative direction” in the film version of Doctor Sleep.
“Still irrevocably shocked by the trauma he experienced as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has fought to find some semblance of peace.
But, that harmony is broken when he experiences Abra, a bold young person with her own ground-breaking extrasensory blessing, known as the ‘sparkle,'” the film’s summation states.
“Instinctively realizing that Dan also has her power, Abra has sought him out, being very very desperate for his help against the ruthless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest to seek immortality.”
The final Doctor Sleep trailer came out as It: Chapter Two slotted in $91 million at the box office in its opening weekend, Variety reports. Doctor Sleep will be in cinemas on November 8th.
