The Latest Champions League winner and the runners up of the 2018/19 Premier League season, Liverpool, have started the new season on a winning note. The Jurgen Klopp led side managed to beat Norwich City 4-1 with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Divock Origi scoring for the Reds.

The fourth goal was, in fact, an own goal by Grant Hanley. Although the team has won convincingly, former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher was not impressed with his former team’s defense. The Englishman stated that the Reds need a lot of improvement in that area or they will perish and end up on the losing side more often than not, especially against stronger teams.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admitted their defense is a “bit of a worry” after their win over Norwich to start the Premier League season. The Reds emerged as comfortable winners at Anfield but a second-half Teemu Pukki strike meant they were unable to claim a clean sheet. Englishman also stated that the Reds need a lot of improvement in that area or they will perish and end up on the losing side more often than not, especially against stronger teams.

The visitors caused some problems going forwards whilst goalkeeper Alisson was also withdrawn with a calf injury before the break. Carragher felt Joel Matip was unfortunate to miss out as Joe Gomez was given the nod to start alongside Virgil van Dijk – and he says they must become a more solid side defensively as they were last season.

Carragher told the sports channel: “The reason we are investigating it is that this was the team with the best defense last season and they almost looked like you couldn’t get past them with Virgil van Dijk.”I was a little bit surprised that Joel Matip was missed out [against Norwich]. I do believe Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s second-best center-back behind Van Dijk but the way Matip performed at the end of last season and in the Champions League final, I think he can feel hard done by.
