About two years ago, it was confirmed that we would have a new movie version of the Image Comics monster written and directed by its own creator, Todd McFarlane. You even had the protagonist of the film, who had expressed being quite excited about the project. Now, unfortunately, the news has been released that due to scheduling issues, Jamie Foxx is leaving Spawn.
This according to statements by McFarlane himself, who during an interview with Shoryuken took the opportunity to give an update on the progress that production has had:
“Last week I received some un encouraging news, as we had an Academy Award winner ready to make the movie with us, but it was not accomplished. We also had people who wanted to fund the film while this guy was involved, but there were scheduling problems and things changed. This is how close we are moving this forward. ”
Another actor who was recently rumored to be involved is Jeremy Renner, but it is not yet known whether such negotiations paid off (or whether they are true). One thing that is certain is that despite all the setbacks that have arisen, McFarlane is still determined to, now, develop the Spawn movie that he always wanted to do.
“Hollywood is very different now. They understand what something like Spawn could be if given a reasonable budget. Joker accomplished that. Until now, I felt like I was lifting this rock by myself, but now others have joined me and are people who know that these stories should be told. I have very few demands for the film. It has to be R-rated, there’s no discussion about that; The story doesn’t worry me that much, but Spawn has to be pretty cool and rude. The last of these requests is that I have to be the director. That is all. For the rest, I am open to debate.
If the project ever sees the light, will McFarlane have what it takes to get behind the scenes and command it? Now that Jamie Foxx is leaving Spawn, which actor will play the character?
