New Zealand’s Taika Waititi will write and direct and produce two animated series of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the classic children’s book by Roald Dahl.
As mentioned in the announcement, Waititi plans to work with two different themes for both series. The first one will be based on the universe and the characters of the famous chocolate factory.
The second will be an original reimagining of the world of the Oompa-Loompas the first, the director would be working on a new version of the story that has previously had famous adaptations, such as 1971 or Tim Burton, but it could also be a story that only uses the world of the factory and its characters to create something completely new and different. It would not be a surprise if Jojo Rabbit’s eccentric director dared to tell the story in his own way.
For the second series, Netflix confirms that it is a completely original story based on the famous Oompa-Loompas. The series will seek to build the world of the peculiar and fun beings that work in the factory with Willy Wonka.
This second series could be the most intriguing of both since it is possible that Taika Waititi seeks to investigate the history of these characters inspired by some indigenous culture. The New Zealander has always been interested in telling stories about indigenous or vulnerable communities, which is why he is likely to present the Oompa-Loompas as a new culture. In addition, the opportunity lends itself to be represented by new talents that come from different cultures that we usually see on screen.
This great universe lends a lot to the creativity that characterizes the director, recent Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay.
