After their success with Marvel Studios, the Russo brothers will continue to extend their filmographic work, but this time under Netflix’s mantle producing a project titled Exit West along with Barack Obama.
According to Deadline, since 2017 Anthony and Joe Russo had acquired the rights to the successful book Exit West ( Welcome to the West, title for Latin America) by Pakistani writer Mohsin Hamid. Well, the portal ensures that the duo of filmmakers has contacted Higher Ground Productions, owned by Barack and Michelle Obama, along with AGBO Films to start the project.
It should be remembered that the Obama production house recently produced American Factory, winner of the 2020 Oscar in the category of Best Documentary.
In addition, it is contemplated that this audiovisual adaptation is starred by Riz Ahmed ( Venom, 2018) and directed by Parisian Yann Demange ( Treason Game, 2018). Regarding the script, it is known that Jessica Goldberg ( Cherry, 2020) was in command, but another screenwriter is expected to take her place.
Exit West immerses us in the bowels of the Middle East where a Civil War has been unleashed and where the global refugee crisis is in full swing. In the middle of that chaotic place, we meet Said and Nadia, who want to flee to preserve their love and to do so they will use magical doors that take them to different places around the world.
This political fiction has been a success in sales since its launch in 2017 and was also named by The New York Times as one of the best books of 2017. In addition, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize awarded him the title of Best Fiction, also in 2017.
Meanwhile, the Russo brothers are working on Cherry, a film starring Tom Holland. The plot according to the directors «is based lightly on a true story about a war veteran in Iraq, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), becomes a heroin addict and that ends up becoming a bank robber only to support his addiction ». Cherry will see its premiere at some point in this 2020.
